Throat Plates

Throat Plates or Baffle Plates, as they are also known, are a key component to your Wood burning or Multi fuel stove. Throat Plates can be made from various materials. Historically, cast iron and steel were the material of choice. However, in modern stoves vermiculite board is used for efficiency purposes. Located in the top of the firebox they have multiple purposes. Baffles prevent rapid heat loss, push heat to the front of the fire and form a natural draw. They also prevent flames/debris going up into the flue and stop soot and ash falling into the firebox. This does mean that regular cleaning of the throat plate is necessary to ensure its longevity.
